The existing factory, used for the manufacture of fencing products, was to be extended.
The brief was to use as much low energy and renewables as practicable.
Our involvement was to design a NIBE ground source heat pump system to heat the factory. The heat pump was to use river water instead of energy stored in the ground. Energy from the river is used to drive the heat pump cycle before being admitted back to the river. To our knowledge this is the only river water heat pump system in operation in Sheffield.
The low-grade heat generated was used with warm air heaters designed to operate on lower output temperatures.
Design challenges included liaison with the Environment Agency to ensure heat rejection temperatures were not higher than 3.5 deg. Above river water to prevent any disturbance to Salmon.
